What We Know About Visual Hierarchy

Visual hierarchy isn’t decoration. It’s the foundation of user experience. We’re focused on helping websites guide visitors toward what matters most — through thoughtful layout, strategic typography, and intelligent use of space and contrast.

Layering & Depth

Creating clear visual depth so users instinctively understand what’s primary, secondary, and tertiary. We don’t use random styling — every layer serves navigation.

Layout Architecture

Designing grid systems and spatial relationships that naturally guide the eye. Smart spacing is the difference between overwhelming and inviting design.

Typographic Systems

Establishing font scales, weights, and sizing that create instant information hierarchy. Visitors understand what to read first without thinking about it.

Color & Contrast

Using color intentionally to highlight what matters. Contrast isn’t just accessible — it’s the language of emphasis in web design.

Responsive Priorities

Adapting layout priorities for every screen size. On mobile, hierarchy becomes even more critical — we’re ruthless about what gets shown first.

Usability Testing

We don’t guess. We test. Eye-tracking and user research tell us if our hierarchy actually works or if we need to redesign.

Our Process for Layout Priorities

We’ve developed a systematic approach to visual hierarchy that’s been refined across hundreds of projects. Here’s how we think about it.

01

Content Audit & Strategy

We don’t design in a vacuum. First, we analyze what content actually matters — what are visitors coming for? What action do you want them to take? This shapes everything that follows. We’re creating a map before building a house.

02

Visual Hierarchy Framework

We establish the hierarchy — primary focal points, secondary information, supporting details. This isn’t visual taste, it’s strategic thinking. We decide what deserves size, color, contrast, and position before we open design tools.

03

Layout Design & Testing

We prototype and test. Does the layout actually guide users where we intended? We’ll iterate — sometimes multiple times. Speed matters less than getting it right. Hiërarchie Ontwerp B.V. doesn’t ship guesses.

04

Responsive Adaptation

Desktop hierarchy doesn’t translate to mobile. We redesign layout priorities for each breakpoint. What’s large and prominent on desktop becomes selective on phone — we’re intentional about every size and every change.

05

Launch & Monitoring

We don’t disappear after launch. We monitor user behavior and analytics. If the hierarchy isn’t working as planned, we’ll optimize. Design is never truly finished — it’s a conversation with your actual users.

We’re Hiërarchie Ontwerp B.V., and we started because we got frustrated with web design that looked pretty but didn’t work. Sites with confusing layouts. Websites where you couldn’t tell what mattered. Information buried under poor visual hierarchy.

In 2018, we decided to build a studio focused on one thing: making websites where hierarchy is invisible because it’s so intuitive. Where users navigate naturally. Where business goals and user needs align through design.

We’ve worked with startups, established brands, e-commerce platforms, and professional services firms. Every project reinforced the same truth — when visual hierarchy is right, everything works better. Conversion increases. User satisfaction increases. Support tickets decrease.

Today, we’re a team of 7 designers and strategists. We’ve completed over 150 projects. Our clients are mostly in the Netherlands, though we’ve worked with businesses across Europe. What connects them all? They understand that how information is organized and presented directly impacts success.

Our Core Values in Design

These aren’t corporate buzzwords. They’re what we actually do, every project, every day.

Clarity First

We don’t prioritize aesthetics over function. A beautiful website that confuses visitors is a failed website. We optimize for clarity, then add beauty on top.

Evidence-Based

We test everything. User research, analytics, eye-tracking — we validate assumptions before declaring success. Opinions are replaced by data whenever possible.

Restraint

We believe in using less, not more. Every element on a page should earn its place. Unnecessary decoration dilutes hierarchy. We’re ruthless about removing what doesn’t matter.

Long-Term Partnership

We’re not chasing one-off projects. We want to grow with our clients, understand their business deeply, and improve over time. Your success is our success.

Why Layout Priorities Matter in the Netherlands

Dutch design culture has always emphasized clarity and functionality. We’re aligned with that tradition. Our approach to visual hierarchy reflects what works for Dutch audiences — direct, efficient, honest design.

For E-Commerce

Clear product hierarchy, organized navigation, and intuitive category structure. We’ve seen conversion rates increase 15-25% when layout priorities are optimized. Visitors find what they’re looking for faster.

For B2B Services

Decision-makers don’t have time to decode your site. We create layouts where value propositions are immediately visible, credibility is obvious, and next steps are clear. No buried contact buttons.

For Content Platforms

When you’ve got dozens of articles, videos, or resources, hierarchy becomes critical. We organize content so visitors can navigate intuitively. Featured pieces get prominence. Everything else has its place.
